Getting Settled in Kenya

Getting Settled in Kenya

I arrived in Nairobi, Kenya on July 13 after the smooth, uneventful journey the Lord provided across the continents! My heart is filled with joy at my return to Africa. My first few weeks in Kenya were filled with helping the Yosts (my new teammates) pack their home for their yearlong furlough, unpacking my new home in Kijabe, and a quick trip to Turkana. My new home at Rift Valley Academy is in Kijabe, about an hour northwest of Nairobi. Kijabe is very accurately named "Cold Wind" in Kiswahili. Moving from the heat of Louisiana's summer to the cool season in the hills of Kijabe has been quite an adjustment, but the lush, green hills filled with blooming flowers and playful monkeys make up for the cold. Life at RVA begins August 17th with new staff orientation followed shortly by the arrival of the students. I am the dorm mom of 20 10th grade girls and am looking forward to the ways the Lord will teach and guide us all this next year. Please pray for wisdom for me as I spend the upcoming year as a spiritual mentor, disciplinarian, and parental substitute.  Also, as I am settling into a new life with new people, surroundings and challenges pray for the Lord to provide new friendships and accountablility and prayer partners for me here in Kenya.

Trip to Turkana

Trip to Turkana

Greg (far right in the photo) and Mindy Yost (photographer) and I took a quick trip north to the town of Lodwar, where our Pioneers Turkana office is located. We met with the Pioneers Turkana Board members to discuss the continued ministry for the upcoming year. George Lokwawi (far left in the photo) is a Turkana pastor that has been working with Pioneers Turkana for several years and continues the ministry of spreading the gospel to the Turkana in the bush. Kathleen Louse (behind me in the photo) joined the office team a few months ago and helps keep the office in Lodwar running. Please pray for George and the other Turkana men and women who continue to share God's word in the bush, pray that Kathleen and I are able to communicate well and keep the office and all that goes with it running well, pray for the Yosts as they are back in the States on furlough helping their daughters transition into their first year of college, and pray for God's guidance for us all in this office as we continue to seek God's will for faithfully reaching the Turkana people.

New Team

New Team

Greg and Mindy Yost and their three children, Abigail Miller, and I make up the Turkana Team. Please pray for this team to grow together as brothers and sisters in the Lord, to faithfully bring glory to the King, to faithfully serve the Lord, and for safety and revival in this land.

This year I am serving as a dorm mom to kids like these on the right. These kids are receiving their high school education, participating in various sports teams, drama plays, music lessons, art classes and all the "normal" preparations that kids in the States go through to prepare for college while their parents are faithfully serving the Lord in rural and isolated areas across Africa. I am currently at the very minimum level of financial support needed. Many of you have been surprised at how expensive life in Kenya is but the fact is that electricity and many other things are much more expensive here than in the States. If you would like to help support me, and by extension these 10th grade girls in my dorm and their parents, please go to the Pioneers website , enter my name and account #111433 and donate online. I can also email a slip to you that can be printed out and mailed in, if that is preferable to you. Thank you so much to all of you who have given money, encouraging words, medicines, flannel sheets, books, Camelbak, Band-Aids and PRAYERS!
